Oops

Well, if there are any Memphis fans out there lurking you can go ahead and smirk now.
I made the mistake of thinking UCLA should beat Memphis in the 1st game of the Final Four, but the Tigers are now about 1 minute from punching their ticket to Monday night's final and they're up by 11 or so.
So, IF my Heels can beat Kansas in the upcoming game, they will face a very big, very quick Memphis team who has outmanned UCLA in almost every aspect of the game.
I said previously that I think Carolina matches up better with Memphis than with UCLA, and I still believe that. Even though this score (78 - 63, now final) would indicate Memphis is better, therefore we would be better off playing UCLA, I don't buy it.
I think UCLA's style of play would give us a harder time than the Tigers' will. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they aren't perfectly capable of beating us, they are. They are very big, and they run the floor very well for such a big team. I do think, however, that their preferred style is also our preferred style, and I think we are faster, so advantage us.
Too much thinking ahead, though. First things first. MUST beat Kansas, or it's a moot point.
I believe I will comment every so often during the game. Not that anyone is watching, just to record the moments for posterity, or maybe hilarity :)

OK
just wanted to see if this worked like I thought.
T-minus 15 minutes till tip-off!

OK, 1st off. TO - and not looking so good so far. But the Heels are infamous for starting slow.

just got home from a weird dinner. you just broke the news to me that Uck-Lah lost. Wow. My dad's pissed I'm sure, as he bet the Bruins to win it all.

Kansas on a huge run right now. YOu needed this timeout.

2nd Official TO, and it's goten worse - can't hit the broad side of a barn, and no defense whatsoever
This sucks, but it `WILL get better

o my lord, it's like, a million to 10. Well, Nebraska was down early to Miami in the 94 nat champ and people thought they were done, but they wore em down, wore em down, and won it.

3rd Official TO and Kansas has scored 18 in a row. At least Tyler hits a free throw to stop the drought. Maybe it's a start.

Jere said...

well, just think, if you make the final now, you should have some serious momentum

Shheezzzz
OK, we're infamous for comebacks, but THIS is a little Redickulus!
BTW - Hi Jere, thanks for stopping by!

Next Official TO, and we're down by 26. My worst nightmares all coming true.
There comes a time when you don't even care about a win anymore, you just want to look respectable. I hope we get there soon!

Woo woo!
Starting down The Comeback Trail
And Green - with the TRES!

SoSock said...

Halftime - down by 17!
Crap!
But the good news is we've showed we can play them now. Not that I ever thought we couldn't, I just wasn't sure if we would or not.
Shaved the 28 point lead to 17 in the last 5 minutes and got a little MO going our way. Just have to come out with kind of onslaught after the break that they had to start the game.
And the great news is - I know we can! Just a matter of - will we?

Good News!
We believe we have isolated the problem - premature celebation.
I had the right sweatshirt on, the right cap, had the magic bottle opener at hand, but still things didn't go right.
The problem is - we opened the Crown before the game, should have waited. We will approach the second half more circumspect, with the same routine as every other game. Opened a beer with the musical bottle opener, shouted Go Heels Go at the end of the fight song, and we're ready to ROCK!

SoSock said...

Edit - that should have been premature celebration -
premature celebation sounds like my life right now :(

All Right -
1st TO of the 2nd and we've shaved a few more off - 14 now.
And fouls are starting to loom for Kansas. We've got the ball after the break, and have cut what was a 28 point deficit in half.
Keep it up guys - please!

Down to 12!
we're getting into manageable territory now!
With any luck we're going to have to figure out to replace the battery in the bottle opener!

SoSock said...

10 - 10m - 10!!!!!

SoSock said...

And an OFFENSIVE Foul
Chance to go to single digits!

SoSock said...

Down to EIGHT!!!!!!

SoSock said...

Kansas calls a TO!
Who'd have thunk it?
They seem to be the team on the ropes!

SoSock said...

SIX - SIX - SIX!!!

SoSock said...

Under 12 TO, and they're down to 6!
The bottle opener is in full swing and the guys in the house are keeping the grandkid awake!
The dog has left and the phone is ringing!
I love this team!

SoSock said...

FOUR, and COUNTING!!!!

SoSock said...

Shot clock violation!
The ultimate sign of a great defensive stand!

SoSock said...

Under 8 TO -
We're at 5 points down and it is now officially a ball game. We actually got it to 4, then they scored 4 quick, but we didn't fold, and a tres by Ellington makes it 5.
Here we go!

Jere said...

went back to reg tv to see 58-53! But like before, as soon as I turn it on, Kansas starts doing all the scoring....

SoSock said...

TO - Heels
7 down and a little over` 4 to go.
The Heels are starting to show the exhaustion from their tremendous run.
Can they suck it up and pour it on for 4 1/2 more minutes?

SoSock said...

Damn - the last official TO, and Kansas has taken off again. Back to a 10 point lead.
We can do it if we're not completely wore out.
A while back I said I just want to see us make it respectable. Well, we've done more than that. We turned the game completely around and pu them on the ropes.
They have now responded, and respectable doesn't seem like enough anymore.
I want the WIN, dammit!

Jere said...

oh well. A Final Four appearance is always a feather to add to your baby blue cap.

SoSock said...

Well, it's all but over.
The season ends on a very bad note, but at least they did put on one of their famous comebacks.
They just ran out of gas, and the final is 84-66 Kansas.
Oh well, opening day for the WSNLL Jr. Rockies is Tuesday, and opening day at Historic Ernie Shore Field is Wednesday.
Baseball takes over!
